Q: Where do I ask questions about import gaming?

A: Unless your question is intended to start a discussion, it's a safe bet that it belongs in Ask The Forum. I've been informed by a moderator that this is the case, and that questions posted in Import Gaming will be locked.

Q: What are good places to get import games from?

A: It's cheapest if you buy from abroad, but there's some reasonably prices shops in the UK aswell if you don't have a credit card. It's possible to get most Japanese imports for £45, and American imports for £33 from the cheapest foreign mail order companies.

Q: How long does DVD Box Office take to deliver usually?

A: Pre-orders will normally ship within a week of release date, then take 5-10 days to arrive. Normal orders usually take a month to be dispatched, unless the item is in stock (very rare). Items are sent individually even if they were ordered together.

Q: Can I play imports on a PAL Gamecube?

A: You can play NTSC games on a PAL Gamecube by using a Freeloader bootdisc. A Japanese or American Cube can be modified to play all NTSC games, but a PAL Cube can only play PAL games, unless a bootdisc is used. The modification is performed by many import companies, and Cubes are also available pre-modified.

Full information on the Freeloader can be found here: http://forum.edge-online.com/viewtopic.php?t=48885

A compatibility list can be found here: http://forum.edge-online.com/viewtopic.php?t=50145

Q: Can I play imports on a PAL PS2 or Xbox?

A: You can play imports on a PAL PS2 or Xbox by fitting a suitable mod chip. As yet, there is no boot disc for either console.

Q: Can I play imports on a PAL Dreamcast?

A: You can play imports on a PAL Dreamcast by using a boot disc. The DC-X boot disc can be bought from most importers, or you can download and burn the Utopia bootdisc from Dreamcast Copy World. However, The DC-X disc is more reliable for booting games in 60 Hz mode. Many Japanese and American games will still boot at 50 Hz on a PAL console when used with a Utopia disc.

Q: Can I play imports on a Game Boy Advance?

A: Yes, all GBA games will work in any GBA. There are no region restrictions. However, you may encounter difficulty in linking between games in different languages. This is possibly due to different versions of the game code being used in the translated versions.

Q: Do Australian games work on European systems?

A: Yes, Australian PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, N64, Dreamcast, and PlayStation games all work on European consoles.

Q: What are Asian PS2 games?

A: Some importers sell Asian PS2 games instead of the Japanese version of the game, because these are available sooner and are cheaper. They are official products intended for the Hong Kong and South East Asia market, and are not pirated. They will work on a Japanese PS2. The actual game is usually identical to the Japanese version, but the box art is sometimes changed, and they will often be supplied with Chinese and / or English instruction manuals.

Q: What about Asian versions of other consoles?

Q: Asian Xbox games are also the Japanese versions. The N64 in Hong Kong used American style N64 cartridges, and were the games were in English. Hong Kong uses the same mains voltage as the UK, so the HK versions of games consoles can be used in the UK without a stepdown transformer.

Q: Can I get RGB from an NTSC Gamecube?

A: The PAL RGB cable won't work on an NTSC Cube. You need a different cable for these systems. It's expensive (~£50) because it has to be made from two other cables, one of which costs around £30. You can buy them from Goblin, VGI, and Lik-Sang.

Q: Will imported accessories work? Will domestic accessories work with an imported machine?

A: The PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox can all use accessories from anywhere in the world. Be aware though, that a Japanese cube will reformat a memory card with American or European saves on it, and vice versa. Dreamcast can use imported accessories with one exception. The US versions of Confidential Mission and House Of The Dead II will not work with the official lightgun. Gamecube and N64 PSUs are interchangable between regions.

Q: Which Japanese Xbox games have English Language support?

A: Known so far: Gunvalkyrie, Sega GT 2002, Panzer Dragoon Orta. PDO will only play in English on a US (or Euro?) Xbox.

Q: Where are some Japanese language translation resources?

A: Some useful links below:

Web translator: http://www.excite.co.jp/world/url/ or http://babelfish.altavista.com/
Kanji dictionary: http://www.aa.tufs.ac.jp/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?1R
Graphical version of the dictionary. Use if your browser can't display Japanese text.
Katakana chart: http://www.e.kth.se/~e96_dsa/www/nihongo/katakana.gif
Hiragana chart: http://home.worldcom.ch/~mrufenac/pictures/hiragana.GIF
Kanji list: http://www.japan-easy.co.uk/

It's recommended that you at least learn katakana (the Japanese syllilabry for representing foreign words and names), because menus in most Japanese games are written in English using katakana. It's also useful (but not essential) to learn a few of the more common kanji, eg, buy, sell, up, down, left, right, hour, day, month, open, close, etc.

Q: Currency conversion?

A: http://quote.yahoo.com/m3?u http://www.xe.com/ucc/ or http://www.currencyconverter.co.uk

Q: What happens about import duty?

A: Generally, parcels marked with a value less than £18 will be ignored by Customs. Goods marked as gifts will be ignored if they are valued at under £36. If you do get hit, expect to pay 2% duty, 17.5% VAT (on the value including duty), and a handling charge to the post office or courrier. (The handling charge with couriers including ParcelForce is generally over £10, so factor that into any purchasing decision.) Most overseas mail order companies are very considerate however. If you're buying from a seller on eBay, you're best asking them nicely to help you out. Couriers (eg, DHL, UPS) will send you an invoice for the customs charges after delivery, while Royal Mail and Parcel Force will collect the charges at the time of delivery.

Q: What are turn-around times for various airmail services?

USPS Airmail: 1-2 weeks (occasionally faster)
USPS Global Priority: 3-5 days
EMS: 2 days (delivered in the UK by ParcelForce)
Japan Post Office Airmail: 5 days
Hong Kong Post Office Registered Air: 10 days
Canada Post Airmail: 1-2 weeks
German Post Airmail: 2-5 days

Q: How do I play imports on my Saturn, N64, and PlayStation?

Saturn: Either by using an adapter cartridge or by fitting switches. Switches are fitted for very a reasonable price by VGI. It's recommended that you get a cartridge with 1 and 4 MB RAM expansion included aswell if you go the cartridge route.

N64: NTSC N64s can play US and Japanese games by removing the tabs from the cartridge slot. To play NTSC games on a PAL system or vice versa, you need an adapter cartridge, for example, the EMS Passport V3. These work in a similar way to SNES adapters, though many games also require a boot code to be inputted. Codes are either included, or found on the www such as this list here: http://www.burn.com.au/products/n64/profiles/uuco.html

PlayStation: Either by fitting a mod chip, or using a mod cart or boot disc. Mod carts and boot discs are easier ways of facilitating the imfamous swap trick, but stop the motor to allow you to change discs without causing dammage. Good boot discs will also include a 60 Hz mode, and a means of inputting boot codes for protected games.

Q: How can I tell if my TV can display 60 Hz or has RGB support?

A: A 60 Hz compatibility list for TVs and monitors can be found at:

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Haven/6881/tv.htm

It's a pretty safe bet to say that any TV made in the past five years with a SCART socket will also support RGB and 60 Hz. But to check, the first place to look is the manual. There's usually a section detailing the types of input and video formats supported. Failing that, you could use (or borrow) a Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube or DVD player, and a game with a 60 Hz mode (Sega games usually have them) or an American DVD. If you get a stable picture, then congratulations, you can use 60 Hz. There is a significant noticable difference between AV cabling (red, white, and yellow phonos), and RGB SCART, so RGB support can be determined easily by an A/B comparison.

Q: Where can I get release dates for Japanese and American games?

A: The best source of release dates in all three territories is GameFAQs. A release schedule for every console is displayed on that console's front page, and you can get the release date for specific games by searching for that game. There's also a Japanese and American release schedule at The Magicbox. Detailed information about upcoming US and UK releases can be found at ToTheGame. Please don't ask about release dates in the forum, because if these sites don't know, its unlikely that anyone in the forum will either.

Q: What about stepdown transformers?

A: If you are going to be buying an imported console, then in most cases, you will need a stepdown transformer to run it on a 240 V electricity supply. Stepdown transformers have a power rating indicating how many Watts they can handle. You should get a stepdown transformer that's rated at above the Wattage of the console you are yoing to use it with, otherwise you risk causing dammage to the console. For example, the PS2 is rated at 50 W, and the Xbox at 100 W. For these, you'd be safe using a stepdown rated at 65 W and 120+ W respectively. It's also a good idea to get a stepdown equipped with a thermostatic cut-off to prevent overheating. You can get stepdown transformers from most importers, and from Maplin).

Q: Tell me about Xbox mod chips and 3rd party Xbox software

A: There are many modchips available (too numerous to mention) falling into two categories:

Solder modchips: these require soldering and should be installed by an expert (or a patient mate who can solder). They normally arrive with a flashed bios so no programmer is necessary.

No-Solder modchips: at the moment there is only one (matrix) but there are many clones currently in the works. These are relatively easy to install and can also be taken out if the need ever arise.

Certain chips also allow the fitting of an on / off switch, which is needed if you wish to use your Xbox on Xbox Live once it has been modded.

Mod chips will also allow you to run 3rd party Xbox applications, including emulators, DivX players, Linux, and games.

Mod chips include a DVD region reset function that effectively makes your Xbox multi-region if you have use a different DVD Playback Kit for each region. Through the use of an aditional software patch (DVD-X), any region of DVD can be played with any Playback Kit.

To play NTSC games on a PAL console, or vice versa, it is recomended that you use a mode selection disc to change your system's video mode. Games run in the incorrect video mode will often suffer from glitches, and unlike PAL games, won't set their video mode acording to your Xbox's dashboard settings. The Enigmah mode select disc will also reset the Xbox's DVD region, if it was already set before the fitting of a mod chip.

For more detailed information on Xbox mod chips, go to http://www.xbox-scene.net/.

Q: How about PS2 mod chips?

A: At present, the only PS2 mod chip known to reliably boot imports is the Messiah 2. These will boot import PS2 and PSOne games, but do not provide multi-region DVD playback or boot PSOne games with mod chip detection routines. They require a lot of soldering to fit.

Q. where do I go to get my PS2 / Xbox modchip? Where can I get a mod chip fitted?

A. UK mod chip retailers known to be reliable are:

http://www.modconsole.co.uk/
http://www.simplymods.com/
http://www.easybuy2000.com/
http://www.playstationchips.co.uk/

Most of the sites mentioned above offer a modding service as do a number of forum users. Saurian ( saur_dash@uip.co.uk ) also provides a modding service. (Anyone else, PM me if you wish to be listed.)

Q: Where can I get Japanese and American video game magazines?

A: Most Japanese magazines can be obtained, either as single issues or by subscription, from Japan Center Bookshop. EGM and GamePro are distributed in the UK by COMAG, and should be available to order from one of your local news agents. Play and the US Official Xbox Magazine are sold by Raven Games London. Other US magazines are available by subscription from their publishers, although international subscriptions do not usually include the cover discs. Arcadia can be obtained from Japanese Domestic Core Resources.
